3D volume rendering of the Red Sea

The Red Sea evaporates more than 2 m of water per year. Relative humidity in the vicinity of the Red Sea in summer reaches 80%. Even though the atmosphere in this region holds a vast amount of water, precipitation is scarce except the South West coast of the Arabian Peninsula where mountain ridge reaches 3 km height. The coastal mountains in the central part of the Red Sea are 1 km high and do not trigger the orographic precipitation as it happens in the southern part of the Red Sea.

This 3D volume rendering of Red Sea highlights the near-surface water vapor availability. Animation reveals that the moisture is transported by breezes as far as 200-300 km from the shore. On the technical side, the simulation was conducted in a coupled ocean-atmosphere setup with 10 km WRF and 2 km ROMS horizontal resolution, boundary conditions were derived from ECMWF 9 km operational analysis. The spatial extent of the Neom is shown by the red grid in the northern Red Sea.
